# Approval groups

> Decide who in your organization approves each action, and how many approvals it needs.

An approval group is a set of people, or other approval groups, who approve an action together. Each group has a threshold, such as **2 of 3 required**, so important actions never rest on one person unless you choose that.

## The governance group

Every organization has a **Governance** approval group. It's the default approval group for organization policies unless they're assigned elsewhere, such as adding members or changing approval groups.

## Create an approval group

**1. Open Approval groups**

Open **Organization** and select the **Approval groups** tab.

**2. Name it**

Select **Create an approval group** and enter a **Name** and a **Slug**. Other organizations address it as `your-org/group-slug`.

**3. Add participants**

Add members or other approval groups, and mark each one **Required** or **Optional**.

**4. Set the threshold**

Choose **Approvals required**:

* **1 of M**: any one approval passes it.
* **M of M**: every member must approve.
* **N of M**: the number you set, for example 2 of 3.

**5. Create it**

Select **Create**. If changes to approval groups need approval, this opens a proposal for your governance group.

To change a group later, select **Edit**, review the changes, and save. Removing a group cancels any proposals it has open.

## Vote on a proposal

When an action needs your group's approval, it appears in **Approvals** in your organization workspace and in the Approvals bell in the header.

1. Open **Approvals** and select **Vote** on the item.
2. Review the details. They were fixed when the proposal opened, so you're approving exactly what was proposed.
3. Select **Approve** or **Reject**, and approve the passkey prompt.

Each item shows progress such as **1 of 2 approved**. When the threshold is met, the change runs right away and the item moves to **Closed**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> A rejection doesn't block a change if enough other members approve it. Items that don't reach their threshold expire.

## What the confirmation dialog tells you

When you submit an action, the dialog says who signs it before you confirm:

* **Runs now, signed by** you: you can carry out this action directly.
* **Opens a proposal at** a group: the action waits until the group approves it.

## Assign approval groups to actions

Which group decides each action is set on the **Policies** tab. See [Delegation and policies](/issuers/delegation).

> [!TIP]
>
> A common setup: a **Governance** group of directors for membership and policy changes, a **Treasury** group with a 2 of 3 threshold for mints and burns, and a single compliance officer for disclosures.
